"Rudland's 'Pincher Martin' Success"

Oliver's new opera, Pincher Martin, based on the novel by William Golding, has received rave reviews for its premiere performance at the Royal College of Music Britten Theatre. Writing for Bachtrack, William Hunt concluded that:

'Rudland appear[s] to have achieved that rare and valuable object: a contemporary work that is both challenging yet accessible. Despite its disturbing subject matter, it is lyrical, inventive, and above all a thoroughly engaging work.'

William Golding's daughter praises 'Pincher Martin' adaptation

Oliver's new opera, Pincher Martin, based on the novel by William Golding, has received rave reviews for its premiere performance at the Royal College of Music Britten Theatre. Judy Carver, William Golding's daughter, expressed her admiration for the adaptation as follows:

'Oliver Rudland’s impressive and vigorous operatic adaptation of my father’s novel Pincher Martin is a really good exposition of this complex book.  Rudland’s music, always dramatically focused but often beguilingly lyrical, provides an allusiveness and thematic resonance to rival that of language.  The production was very carefully realised, in a way that was both innovative and respectful of the novel, and visually very exciting, and the musical performers achieved a standard of excellence which would have gratified my father.  A wonderful experience.'

Critical Acclaim for 'Pincher Martin'

Oliver's new opera, Pincher Martin, based on the novel by William Golding, has received rave reviews following its premiere performance at the Royal College of Music Britten Theatre.

In his review, Mark Ronan described the music as 'wonderful and original', stating that the composer had 'produced a one-and-a-quarter hour Gesamtkunstwerk of stunning originality'.

He concludes his review by remarking that 'the Royal Opera House has presented works of far lesser value in the Linbury Studio, and even sometimes on the main stage... It is the only opera in the classical sense (orchestra pit, singers, staging) on any of Golding’s novels, and is absolutely not to be missed.'
